For the longest time I attempted to translate the aesthetics of this collection into a wearable ring, but to no avail. The designs always seemed lacking in dynamism. I finally decided to become a little more lenient in my approach to wearable. This piece is drawn from an amplifier component on a chip board. Unlike earlier pieces it is made from 1mm stainless steel wire, and has no danger of bending or distorting.

2010

This neckpiece is drawn from a common household transformer. The object intrigued me because of the importance of the cables that protruded so simply. The thought came to me that this was the heart of the home, pumping electricity in an out throughout the house.

The idea that this almost goes unnoticed; that the cables that run from it are more obvious to be seen, interested me also. Through this I decided that the reference point of the object should be unobtrusive, the black rubber cable/tubing is as much a part of the piece as the wire and gold object it leads to.

Capacitors are one of the most common electrical components in the world. Even if you don’t know what they are, you have undoubtedly seen one (or several) on a circuit board. They come in several forms, but their purpose is to store electrons and therefore the electric charges needed to run the whole thing.

Within this I find them fascinating objects and simple as their forms are, they can make for some really interesting shapes made in wire. This piece is drawn from a Capacitor found inside an old VCR circuit board. Like other pieces in this collection it is made from fine silver which takes the impression of the wire wonderfully. Though the front appears quite plain and restrained it is set off by a bright blue powdercoat applied to the reverse.

Finding the perfect aspect of its counterpart was a challenge for this piece, unlike other pieces there was no obvious central feature. As a result I ended up using a much larger section of the object. It surprisingly made for one of my personal favourite piece in the collection.

“Capacitors are one of the most common electrical components in the world.

As they come in so many shapes this piece is also based of a capacitor found in a VCR circuit board.”

This is a companion piece to Single Layer Capacitor, The form is drawn from the wire conductors that attach to the circuit board.

Sterling silver (oxidised); Found zipper.

2008

My work is inspired by aesthetics associated with masculinity. This ring is a celebration of this fascination, the silver is embossed with denim and oxidised to resemble the course texture and steel colour of this fabric. The ring retains a manly aesthetic but the inclusion of an opening (or closing) zip adds just a touch boyish playfulness.

Nut and bolt with gold is a piece that I suppose could mark the start of a new collection. I have always been really interested in the nut and bolt, in fact I share this fascination with all manner of connecting instruments. I find their simple and inconspicuous functions a contrast to what is option a spectacularly interesting aesthetic.
